USk - Austin WW SketchCrawl 42

Love Balls food truck | uh?... happy motoring! (your mileage may vary!)
created on iPad with Procreate and Wacom Intuos Creative (pressure sensitive) Stylus

A wonderful time was had by all at the WW SketchCrawl #42 as USk - Austin crawled around a couple of blocks in the heart of Austin's UT Campus urban area at the  the Spiderhouse Cafe and Ballroom and the original Trudy's Texas Star.  Sterling sketching weather met us at this sprawling indoor/outdoor cafe that is a warm, vibrant,  embodiment of the "Keep Austin Weird" spirit.    Good times, and free refills on tap! .... happy motoring!   Please be sure to join the fun at USk - Austin whenever you're in town!

Fredericksburg

I love a chance to get out of town and sketch some of the cool little towns all over Texas. When the chance came to spend some time in the hill country outside Austin I took it. Fredericksburg is a sketching goldmine, but it seemed that every time I was there in the past it was about 104 degrees and miserable for sitting. This week was lovely so I drew my favorite building-the former White Elephant Saloon. It now holds a very swanky home decor shop.

Sketching around Austin

Last month the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) had their annual conference in Austin.  A group of design drawing professors set up a sketchcrawl for the first day of the conference,  I was lucky enough to be invited to come along (now that I'm a bonafide academic), as was Richard Alomar, the founder of Urban Sketchers New York and a professor at Cornell.  It was a great day of making new friends and leisurely sketching impressions of a great city.  At the end of the day our accordion-style Moleskine sketchbooks were opened and hung for display at a 3rd Street gallery (see photo).  Austin is hungry for more sketchcrawls!

The broad pedestrian way outside the Commons on the U of Texas campus.

The amazing axial view from in front of Memorial Tower to the State Capitol.
The Memorial Tower on campus.
Yup, the back yard at Stubb's BBQ is where I first saw Willie Nelson live, and was captivated by his "Willieness."
One of the old stone bridges over Waller Creek (this one at Sixth Street downtown), drawn from the limestone creek bed.
The accordion-style sketchbooks were hung from small binder clips on the gallery wall...pass me a Shiner, please...

Waiting the nightly bat exodus. Austin.TX

The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. Nearly 1.5 millions Mexican Free-tailed bats reside in vertical crevices beneath the bridge. The bats provide a valuable environmental service to central Texas by consuming 10-15 tons of insects nightly.

SketchCrawl Saturday - Austin

Austin sketchers will also be celebrating World Wide SketchCrawl 35, as we meet-up at the SFC Austin Farmers Market, Downtown; 400 W. Guadalupe, Republic Square Park @ 9:00am.   From there we'll meander and have lunch in the 2nd St. district then quite possibly crawl over to the South First Street bridge for some afternoon sketching and a bird's eye view (and sounds!) of the Austin Reggae Festival @ Auditorium Shores.  We'll regroup later and round-out the day with an evening @ Threadgill's, an iconic Austin food/music venue, from 7:00pm - till ?   We'll be relaxing, sketching the scene, and enjoying while listening to Seth Walker (w. Carsie Blanton)  @ 9:00 pm croon the night away.

So, if you're in Austin please join us for all or any part of this sketch adventure.  Hope to see you there!
